HIV/AIDS ABC-VCT

Integrated ABC/VCT/Treatment Programs for HIV/AIDS through Community and Faith-Based Organizations, USAID

MSCI has agreements with Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, CDC and the Elizabeth Glaser Foundation to add a treatment adherence component to the home-based care being provided by community groups in Mozambique and Malawi. MSCI staff have worked with these organizations to other university partners and local staff to:


 

establish/improve effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention and education for individuals and communities;
enhance the ability of home-based care providers to address prevention, palliative care and psychosocial issues of AIDS patients and their families;

assess the capacity of rural hospitals and remote health facilities to provide ABC/VCT/ARV treatment services;

facilitate training of those providers by our university, government and foundation partners on provide clinicians and social workers with treatment protocols, and guidelines and that address adherence to HIV therapies, psychosocial issues, cultural considerations and palliative care;

train CFBO clinical care providers techniques, laboratory monitoring, and management of co-infection treatment;

reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and improve access to clinical care and nutrition for pregnant/post-natal women; and

establish/improve effectiveness of prevention and education campaigns with focus on PLWHA;

establish indicators and strengthen monitoring and evaluation capacity of CFBOs local providers.;

develop an exchange of surveillance information and best practices for CFBOs.

In Swaziland, MSCI has provided a grant to TransWorld Radio to develop a national mass media campaign focused on HIV prevention. MSCI supported the testing of a series of public service announcements, and recorded programs promoting the ABC approach for prevention and to reduce stigma and discrimination of PLWHA.


Guide to Life: Program for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS: El Salvador

The goal of this project was to provide HIV prevention services to prostitutes, truck drivers, and women selling food from road side stands. Services include counseling, testing, provision of condoms, antiseptics and referrals to medical facilities. A population of 180 women received treatment and support.


HIV/AIDS Prevention in Asylums, Orphanages, and Villages: El Salvador
Through this Global Fund project:


196 persons were trained in basic HIV prevention, family planning, and reproductive health; 224 health workers were trained in HIV/AIDS bio-safety for management of hazardous waste/contaminated products;

271 health workers and volunteers were trained in pre- and post- test counseling and support to home health care providers; and

assessments of foster homes, orphanages, and housing for the elderly were also conducted.
